In 2009, I was contacted by the Humane Society of the United States to create a tribute to movie dogs to be shown at the 24th annual Genesis Awards. I attended the awards on March 20th at The Beverly Hilton and shot some behind the scenes video and photos. The book, Wonder Dogs, was featured in the Genesis celebrity gift bags, and all 850-odd guests took home a Wonder Dogs bookmark in their bags. This video features a few of the dozens of stars at the awards, including Ginnifer Goodwin, Kristen Bell, Jennifer Taylor, Emily Deschanel, Moby, Pauley Perrette, Charlotte Ross, and Nubs, canine hero of the book Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle, with handler, Major Brian Dennis. This is from the 1994 movie Bari (retitled Northern Passage for the DVD release). It is based on the novel Baree, Son of Kazan, by James Oliver Curwood, and is about a wolf-dog, Baree (aka Bari), who suffers terrible abuse at the hands of an evil trapper (Lorne Brass). Baree befriends a young woman (Neve Campbell) and he tries to protect both himself and her from the man. I believe the star of the film is a beautiful Shiloh Shepherd, though I have tried to contact the trainers without success and have been unable to confirm the dog's breed. It is possible that he is an unusual looking long-haired German Shepherd Dog. The prequel to this film, Kazan (which does star a long-haired GSD), is profiled in the book Wonder Dogs: 101 German Shepherd Dog Films, so please check that out if you are interested in dog movies.
